Because every time someone orders an XPS with the 720p screen, a little kitten is killed.
Seriously though, if you don't value a great looking screen on your brand new laptop, don't upgrade to the 1080p. It's all personal preference.

yeah can't really tell you why but why I did is because I travel a lot & wanted the great looking screen when I am away from my external 23" Dell U2311.
Plus is was a silly cheap upgrade through AAFES (military).
And the majority of the folks who suggested it here were not wrong!
I am glad I spent the extra $$ even if it meant less Starbucks more 7/11.

Natively, everything will be smaller, but you can adjust that by changing the resolution or by changing a couple of other things. Essentially, the color reproduction of the 1080p is what makes it so great. One of the best screens on the market. The 720p screen is your low cost basic screen which looks grainy even compared to my 6 year old dell Inspiron 6000 1280x800 screen. I was very disappointed in the 720p screen when I received my L501x. It was the main reason I returned the L501x and bought the L502x.

the basix xps15 screen is a budget (low-end) screen and, the 1080p screen is the 2nd best 15,6 inch screen out there today, only the ips screen from the elitebook (which is 3x the prices) is better
well worth the money

What's unfortunate in this case is that the 1080 screen seems to be a better screen than the 720, irrespective of resolution. Many older people or people with poorer vision would be much more comfortable on a 720 screen resolution, as things would be more readable, assuming equivalent display quality of course.
My dad would never be able to use a 15" 1080 screen, as stuff would be way too small for him to work comfortably.

If you're getting the Dell XPS 15, you have GOT to get the 1920x1080 B+RGLED screen, otherwise the laptop will be worthless. The quality of the 720p is absolutely gut-wrenching (even compared to other 720p's), but the B+RG 1080p panel is one of the best screens currently available right now on a laptop of its kind.
Ordering an XPS 15 with the 720p screen is one of the worst possible computer buying decisions you could make, so I'm helping you avoid it
The $799 base XPS 15 + downgraded service plan (-$55) + 1920x1080 B+RG display (+$150) + coupon code (-$70) = $824 US.

I do recommend the Dell XPS 15 though. It's a really nice computer, but you absolutely have to get the 1080p screen.
(All the downgraded service plan basically means is instead of having a technician come to you for warranty repairs, you have to ship the computer off to Dell and pay for the shipping yourself)
If the 1080p screen is out of your budget, don't even consider the XPS 15 :P
1080p is the most important upgrade option on the XPS 15 because the display affects everything you do. Higher resolution means less scrolling, and easier multitasking with two side-by-side near-full-size windows.
do not settle for the 720p on the XPS 15. The XPS 15 is a nice multimedia laptop and needs a good screen to go with it.
These images demonstrate the difference between the 720p (1366x768) and 1080p (1920x1080) resolutions:
720p: (on 15.6", content is oversized, it's difficult to fit more than one window, and you will have to scroll a lot)

1080p: (on 15.6", content is a bit smaller, which makes for a more comfortable, less-cramped viewing experience. If you've never seen higher than 720p in 15.6", you will be amazed at how nice the extra room is. If the fonts feel too small, windows lets you enlarge them while staying with the 1080p resolution)

Even simple Web browsing can benefit greatly from a high-resolution: you won't be scrolling all the time, and you can fit two browser windows on the screen.
