Contemplating an x200/201/220? Read here...

hi all,

i've been a long time member, don't post much, but i do frequent here to sift through whenever i am in the market for a new laptop. well, i just purchased an x201i and thought i would share my opinions in the hope of helping others who had similar hesitations in buying this laptop. i'll start off by saying that i have owned quite a few laptops: an old thinkpad (ibm, can't remember the model), alienware area m9700, 2 dell inspirons, asus g60. probably a few others that i can't recall. on to my thought process going in and further that, impressions:

i had a few hesitations with the x200 series. my biggest one was the screen size. at 12.1 i was really worried that i would have a hard time adjusting to the reduced real estate. up until recently, a 14 inch inspiron was my go to machine and i felt really comfortable with that screen size/portability combo. i did a ton of "x201 vs. t410" thread searches to gather opinions, ultimately knowing that everyone's mileage will vary when it comes to screen size. well i'm glad to say that after 48 hours of use, the 14 inch screen is a distant memory. i am completely acclimated to the 12.1 and have no issues at all. if i could get the ultraportability of the x201 with a 14 inch screen, would i swap? absolutely, but i found the portability/battery life vs. screen size less of a compromise than i had initially thought it would be.

another reservation was the lack of an optical drive. i am missing it quite honestly, but not enough to regret my purchase. i briefly considered the ultrabay, but at another $200, i think i will just opt for an external drive in the $40-60 range.

my last reservation was the lack of touchpad. the x201 i was eyeing was a great deal, but did not come with a touchpad. having owned a thinkpad before, i was familiar and pleased with the touchpoint, but it had been so long since i've gone without the touchpad, i was hesitant. as i was strictly shopping refurbished, the closest in price equipped with the touchpad meant a $150-200 price jump. for obvious reasons, i decided to go without. 2 days in and i don't miss the pad as much as i thought i would.

some other observations:

*battery life is great, am getting 5-6 hrs. off the 6 cell, which i am very happy about. have not tried battery stretch yet.

*very happy with the screen quality, people have differing views, but i see no problems with color saturation or brightness.

*i love the little thinklight, i notice my estimated battery life takes a hit when it is on, but it works well for its intended purpose.

*noise levels are louder than i had anticipated. nothing crazy, but i do have the coil/cpu whine which is common for the i series processors. the hdd is constantly kicking in and the fan kicks in pretty often with the latest bios. i seem to be able to "feel" the computer working underneath my palms more so then other laptops i have used.

*excellent keyboard, but you all knew that.

*build quality is great.

all in all, the best laptop i have ever owned. it has really changed the way i approach computing. i can tote this anywhere and even just around the house. it is too easy to move it upstairs, downstairs, from the desk to the couch to the kitchen. for a full fledged computer, i am really impressed. anyhow, i hope i have swayed anybody on the fence about this little gem. as i said up top, i found this forum an invaluable resource in making my purchase decision and hope i have returned the favor. i would be happy to answer questions for those still thinking about buying one.

Congrats, its a really nice laptop.

You should check eBay for the Ultrabase. I got a brand new one for I think $110. It used to be $150 on buy.com too.

re: user experiences with smaller screens (12")

my opinion is that those users who have used laptops longer (and the more the variety, the odds favor them better) tend to have less of an adjustment problem going from 14" inches to 12" than do relatively new laptop users.

when i was first exposed to smaller screen LCDs back around 2000 (anyone remember the ultrathin and small Toshiba Portege's then), i remarked that i could never use anything so small after using the thinkpad 76x/77x and 600 series.

my opinions didn't change that much over the next few years until the x30 series really changed my mind that you can have a very portable machine with decent resolution with a sufficient cpu/ram capacity ratio comparable to the larger business thinkpads. (the x20 series had a usable small screen but the cpu and max ram capacity were too limited).

my opinion is furthered corroborated when i deal with interns that come thru here who often use college issued or purchased laptops which are generally 14" or larger and they all uniformly echo that they couldn't or wouldn't use a 12" screen. the netbook offerings in the past several years have helped some people get introduced to smaller screens but typically, the people who have the most aversion to smaller screens are those who have lesser ownership experiences with laptops.

of course, eyestrain and less than 20-20 eye-sight might dictate that they wouldn't choose a smaller screen, but i can point out that i don't have 20-20 vision anymore and do tend to eye-fatique rather readily and would still prefer to have a 12" laptop display running at 1280x800 rather than a 14" at that same resolution; the screen real-estate tradeoff is more than compensated by the longer battery life and lesser weight of the smaller machine and don't have any additional eyestrain using the smaller display.

maybe your theory is correct. i am quite surprised at how happy i am with 12.1. i used to think 15" was small. pretty crazy.

Co-incidentally, I just got my x201 today. I am also used to the 14" screen but have found the transition to the 12" screen non-problematic. In fact, as I mentioned in another thread, I find the 1280x800 res to be perfect for the 12".

On another note, I also find that the HDD is spinning under my right palm. This is different from my experience on the R400, but I am assuming that (1) because the x201 is a smaller machine, things are a bit mashed up inside and so I can feel the HDD. Point to note is that I have the 7200 rpm drive - maybe that makes a difference.

But all in all, like so many others have posted, I find the x201 to be a brilliant machine!

Reply 6 : Contemplating an x200/201/220? Read here...

i actually have the 5400rpm drive, so i think its just the design. smaller case probably leaves less room for the vibrations to dissipate.

Recover the Recovery Partition?

Hey All

First time poster here. I've backed myself into a corner and am unsure of how to get out.

I own a Samsung R580-JSB1US, and it has been great so far. A couple months ago, I wanted to try out a dual boot of Ubuntu and Win 7. Unfortunately, Ubuntu wouldn't install as there were already 4 partitions on the drive (Recovery, boot, system (C), and a data drive (D)) So I backed up the recovery partition and deleted it. Big mistake.

Here comes my question: is there any way to restore that recovery partition and make it bootable by using the F4 key at startup? I recreated the partition and copied all the data over, but no luck in booting to it. Please help!

Any known good Dual Layer media for HP Envy?

I just got my Hp EMVY 17 3D (Sandy Bridge) and am looking to buy some dual layer DVDs. I've been burned in the past by odd compatibility issues between burners and media. Can anyone give me a known good brand of DL DVDS that work with the blu-ray combo drive in the ENVY (assuming its the same as the previous gen 17 and 17 3D)?

Reply 1 : Any known good Dual Layer media for HP Envy?

I've had great success with these, just tried them to double check.

Verbatim Storage media - DVD-R DL - 4x 8.5 GB

Preferred by DVD drive manufacturers, Verbatim DVD media continues to set the standard for high-speed disc performance, reliability, and compatibility. DVD-R Dual Layer nearly doubles the storage capacity with two AZO recording layers on a single-sided disc. Compatible and supported by dual layer hardware from Pioneer, Plextor, Sony & other leading 2X-4X Dual Layer manufacturers. Store up to 8.5GBs of video while maintaining compatibility with most DVD video players or DVD-ROM drives.

XPS 15 Vs XPS 14 Laptop

Guys please pardon me if something wrong happens in this post as it is my first post in NotebookReview.

Guys I am completely baffled by reading so much about the laptops of the various manufacturers.I want to urgently purchase a laptop and i am struck between the above mentioned laptops .I just wan't to know which amongst XPS 14 or XPS 15 is better and why.I had personally seen both of these laptops at DELL shop. And i thought i would opt for 14' inch screen.

But in some of the earlier posts in this forum i found users complaining about the glitches in Screen of XPS 14.can somebody tell me whether DELL has resolved problems in its XPS 14 screen or not.Does anybody has recently purchased XPS 14 and suffered with some problem.

I was about to finalize XPS 14 but then to my fortune i luckily found this forum.Guys do help me in selecting amongst XPS 14 AND XPS 15.

Reply 1 : XPS 15 Vs XPS 14 Laptop

XPS14 will be dismissed soon or is already dismissed.

Reply 2 : XPS 15 Vs XPS 14 Laptop

XPS 14 and 15 are very similar, just one is bigger. They both come with meh 1366 x 786 screens, but Dell also has 1920x1080 screen available for the 15. If you want a better screen on the 14 you have to upgrade it yourself.

That said, they don't make the 14 any more, so I hope you weren't looking for a smaller laptop.

Reply 3 : XPS 15 Vs XPS 14 Laptop

XPS 14 doesnt have usb 3 IIRC

Reply 4 : XPS 15 Vs XPS 14 Laptop

XPS 14 isn't even sold new anymore, only refurbished.

Always buy the screen upgrade. Almost always it isn't just resolution that gets bumped up, the screen brightness goes up as well.

Reply 5 : XPS 15 Vs XPS 14 Laptop

There's nothing technically wrong about the stock screens on xps 14/15, they are just not good. Most xps14 owners replaces it by buying an 900P LG screen. You can find more info on "official swapping xps14 screen blah blah thread", probably on the page 3 or 4 of this forum. 15 owners got it easy since they can opt for 1080P screen right from Dell, a lot more expensive though.

To be honest with you, I would probably go with an xps15 if I were given another chance. They are pretty much identical, except 14 is a tiny bit smaller, while 15 carries a subwoofer and a USB 3.0 port thanks to the extra space.

Reply 6 : XPS 15 Vs XPS 14 Laptop

I like my XPS 14 because it's easy to carry around. USB 3.0 doesn't do much for me since I don't use it for anything other than my wireless mouse and tv tuner. I'm a bit concern about the subwoofers in the 15 - makes you think about all the vibration and the long term effects on the harddrive.

Anyway, I'm happy with my 14 since I'm not a big gamer.

Guys I am in INDIA and laptops are still bit new to INDIAN market.I went to an Official Dell store and i was told that DELL now only manufactures Inspiron and XPS models. And XPS was avilable in the shop.So should i not opt for DELL XPS 14.The original Screen configuraton is like this

35.6 cm (14'') HD WLED Display with TrueLife (1366*768).

Does problems in Screen comes with this Screen configuration?Or this is improved screen by DELL for XPS 14.And if I changed my Screen then how much additional cost it would incur(I have still not purchased any Laptop). And to what configuraton should i changed my Screen (If required)?

Guys if i changed my screen then other then Screen is there any other problems that may occur in XPS 14.

Should I go for Sony Vaio Series.

Guys please post your valuable suggestions as i am completely baffled now .

Those are the only two that differs between 14 and 15, I think. Performance is fine. I'm running on an i5 core and the laptop does get hot when it's on my lap compared to other brands I have (Sony Vaio, Asus, Gateway, and Acer). I think the fan runs more often then other laptops, so I'm not sure what the future holds on that.

I'd recommend swapping out the stock screen with the LG. Costs around $86 USD from SunValleyTek and they ship international.

Edit: Also forgot to mention that there's a new version of the XPS 15, but I'm sure you see it in the forum. So, difference between the 14 and 15 now would also be the SandyBridge cpu.

Power Adapter options? Returning from Mac...

So I have been away from ThinkpadLenovo for a few years and the one thing I think I have gotten really accustomed to is the Apple power adapter. Not having "two tails" and being able to wind the cord on itself is a blessing for travel. The Lenovo power bricks are making me insane! The AC cord has nowhere to go at all and the DC cord only has a lame velcro for winding.

Please help! I've got a U260 now and a T410 on the way. Looking for any and all ideas about how to improve this situation.

Don't even get me started on the mag-safe connector. I'll definitely have to learn to live without that one.

Reply 2 : Power Adapter options? Returning from Mac...

I've got a T520 on order. I don't want to carry the Lenovo brick around with me, so I'll leave it plugged in at home. My travel charger will be the Targus APM69US (don't have it yet, will probably get this weekend). The AC prongs are mounted on the brick (which is small), so you don't have a cord from the outlet to the brick. It will charge two devices at once, and tips for most popular devices are included with the charger. If you need a different tip and Targus makes it, they'll send it to you for free. Staples has it for $109.99, it can be had for less online. It seems to get mostly positive reviews.

Ohhhh. Now we are talking, that has some promise! I'll investigate further.

That targus is what I use and I bought one of them on office depot for 70 dollars and there was a deal site not too long ago selling these for 25 dollars.

Reply 6 : Power Adapter options? Returning from Mac...

I find the Apple wall-warts really awkward and unbalanced.

There are certain ways of wrapping the cord with the stock Lenovo adapters and then using the integrated velcro strap to hold it in place. When I feel like it, I arrange both wires together into a neat bundle and use the velcro in a figure eight around both the adapter and the wire bundle. When I'm lazy, it's just *wad*.

Reply 7 : Power Adapter options? Returning from Mac...

I used to love the MagSafe adapters right up until I had one separate and spark and another start to melt.

Then I stopped loving them and became terrified of leaving them plugged in unattended. Just my $0.02...

As far as the ThinkPad adapters go, I've never really had a problem packing them. Tip: unplug the AC portion from the brick itself and secure the whole thing with the velcro. You can cut down on the footprint a good bit that way.

Reply 8 : Power Adapter options? Returning from Mac...

Agreed on removing the AC cable to wind up. Sadly, the velcro on the U260 adapter is to short to make it around anything other than just the DC cord. Can't make it around the adapter itself or the AC cord. Sad.

I seem to recall some AC side plugs that were basically JUST the plug, or a REALLY short plug instead of the long AC cord. Any ideas on if these still exist? Where to pick one up? I'll have to start scouring ebay.

Reply 9 : Power Adapter options? Returning from Mac...

The ThinkPad adapters have a full ten inches worth of velcro strap, which should be more then plenty.

CF-Y5 DC in jack / service manual

Soo frustrating. I sent my laptop in for service 2 years ago, the DC jack was busted on the laptop. Guess what, it's failed again and my warranty is over. For a toughbook, I wish they could have made the DC JACK tough. I love this laptop, but wish they got the DC jack right. Has anybody themself replaced the DC IN JACK? I have found a service manual for a similar model, and it has instructions to replace the DC IN JACK. There is a list of part numbers in the back, is it possible to order the parts? where? If anybody has the exact manual for my model it might useful. The model #CF-Y5LWFZZBM

The DC jack type for your unit is as tha same found on CF-18, 29, 30, w series. t series and name a few. maybe you can find it with those laptop with dead mbo. like the IBM laptop or sorry(I mean sonny).

Can you see if pin 23,25,31,33 (pci-e/wifi) and 36,38(usb/wwan) have tracks on them? If there's no tracks then there is no way it would ever work. If they are attached then you'd probably also need to apply unwhitelisting to them. Best way to do that would be to find an ICH8M machine with that port enabled and working, "save" it's port data (pcieport.px), then load that on your system.

Based on the lspci output here, I can see the 8710P has:

port1=root port (probably unconnected)

port2=wifi

port5=another port - probably expresscard

Interestingly, looks like the 8710P/W and HDX9000 shares the same drive caddies. The HDX9000 has mPCIe port layout here.

The other way of getting a native sata controller would be to tap the ICH8M I/O chip's sata lines. Tricky to do though as would need to fish Here's an idea of what's involved.

Is there a mPCIe sata controller available? 2510P owner's might want to know about that.

Reply 2 : Enable extra mini-PCI-e

8710 does not have Expresscard

It has Cardbus instead

I can see a miniPCIe port with the intel wifi (port2 in which I succesfully installed a USB3 controller)

and

next to it it had the signs of a mini-PCI-e connector. In which I installed

a mini PCIe connector.

I tried putting both the original (HP whitelisted) wifi card and the usb3 controller at

(soldered connector) with no success . Nothing is recognised .

I think this port is NOT crippled (all pins are connected) since it has exactly the same

pins connected as the working and tested miniPCI-e (number 2) with the installed USB3

port.

Any idea where to get the pciport.px from an ICH8m with that port enabled?

Dual Display

I am planning on setting up my Thinkpad T510 with dual displays and am trying to figure out the best setup

the laptop has the following outputs:
- VGA
- Displayport
- USB

the monitors have the following inputs:
- VGA
- DVI-D
- USB

What is the best way to connect the laptop to these displays? I was thinking VGA to VGA for one monitor and Displayport to DVI-D (via an adapter) for the second.

Will I notice a difference in the displays? Is there a better configuration that I am missing? Should I be going with a USB to DVI adapter instead of connecting VGA to VGA?

Any help is appreciated

Touch panel died me, help needed!

Hey people,

Today the touch panel above my keyboard died on me. So now I'm stuck not being able to use it to turn on/off wireless/bluetooth/camera. I can't bring it in for RMA for a while so I need some help from the community.

Can someone help me by using Sharpkeys: (utility to change keys) to change the scroll lock button to toggle on/off the wireless? This could help me locate which unknown key I need to reassign. And if that doesn't work, if you could save a copy of your registry then share, that would be really helpful.

You can download it here:

SharpKeys

Thanks

Not sure if it helps, but here is what happened when I tried it:

Reply 2 : Touch panel died me, help needed!

Thanks for the attempt moral, unfortunately no luck. I have a feeling this may not be possible since it could be a switch that can only be activated on a hardware level.

Update: Somehow I brought it back to life by resetting the CMOS battery. No clue why. Here are the facts:

-restarting windows: not fixed

-shutting down completely and reset: fixed

I'd appreciate any theories as to how this happened though :s

Good to hear that. What did you do?

Reply 7 : Touch panel died me, help needed!

Put in a different CPU.

When I was trying to fix my screen problem I was lazy and didn't take out the CPU (SP9400), accidentally touched it with my soldering iron. I couldn't see any damage so I thought it was ok, turns out it's dead. Now I'm stuck with a hotter slower CPU (T7300).

Screen problem still not fixed, but I'm going to buy an hdmi cable and just use it as a gaming system connected to my tv.

Going to use my netbook for everything else, until I save up enough for a new notebook.

Reply 8 : Touch panel died me, help needed!

I didn't know that the mobo support the older T series. But what's the problem with your screen?

You'll use it as an "xbox" with your tv. That's what my friend also done with his GX700 when it breaks into two pieces. Still work as a dedicated Fifa machine.

Reply 9 : Touch panel died me, help needed!

I would assume that you need a new flex cable (i.e. FFC cable).

I will put Software Framework and Support Assistant up once I make them.

HP Quick Launch Buttons I'll keep on each individual thread for now because it installs a driver. It seems that the newer models use a new version that is no longer officially compatible with the ones even from late last year. I've been reluctant to update to this new version in the driver threads due to the changes.

You may want to add dm3-3xxx (even though it's only CTO right now, no retails model yet) to the list

Added, thanks! Although I'm usually up to snuff when keeping track of the notebook models, I sometimes will overlook new models and need to be made aware of them.

Justin, I'm sure you intend to do this anyway.. but a running tally at the bottom of your post showing the most current updates is very helpful in staying current....

Make sure that pick the correct version that is applicable to your notebook. Version 3 works for most notebooks on or before late 2009, and version 4 works for most notebooks produced after late 2009.

Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

Okay so here is the deal to anyone who reads this.

On Dec 10th 2007 I purchased a 52" LCD TV from a Local vendor.

The Samsung LNT5265FX

On January 21st the TV suffered a failure of the Panel and it took several months of fighting with samsung before they finally replaced the TV.

Now less then a full year after recieving the replacement we are at it again.

So here is the run down of my issue.

6 Days ago I noticed the TV would randomly shut off. However It happened so rarely that I figured I must have sat on the remote or something.

4 days ago the TV became hard to turn on. The red LED light that flashes when you use the remote would just blink at me and the TV would click ever 15 seconds and not turn on.

After 10 minutes of fighting it would turn on but the picture would be all screwed up. The pixels would flicker or be black and being that I now realized this was a real issue I haven't used my TV since.

I called Samsung and I have E-mailed. The Customer service at Samsung in Canada is horrible and they were glad to inform me that since the TV was a replacement the warranty wasn't renewed even though it was a new TV. NO! It carries over from the original purchase.

A service call for this in My area is $50 to get the tech out the door,$50 to check the TV , $215 for actually servicing the TV and god knows what for parts.

Now so far I have not recieved an e-mail from samsung higher ups yet but I have heard that there is a way to get an extra 3 months warranty if I register online. Now I did this and there doesn't appear to be any change. I was informed this offer might only extend to the USA.

I have read page after page of disapointed customers with the same issue as myself. I am wondering if anyone here is interested into looking into either a class action or if someone at Samsung is going to get off their butt and do something to make me go away quietly.

I am in Canada so this part will not help anyone but Canadians.

If you are having a hard time getting your requests handled professionally with their customer service numbers try e-mailing them at oop@seca.samsung.com.

This is the office of the president in (TO)Canada. Feel free if your a Canadian customer who is both unhappy with the product and service and thinks that this 3 month extension should be extended to Canada to send them a lovely msg telling them how happy you are.

Pass oop@seca.samsung.com around and post it on Blogs , Facebook, Youtube. Get it out there.

As for any Samsung Rep that might read this post. I suggest you start taking me and other here seriously otherwise your company might find itself on the wrong end of a lawsuit.

I also Recommend to anyone who is interested ( And Canadian)
To contact

Consumer Protection at 1-(800)889-9768

And

The Law Society of Upper Canada
at 1 (800) 268-8326

Note: With the law society you will be given another number which is a $6 call that will give you a ref number for 30 minutes of free legal advice.

Now if Samsung is ready to play ball with me they can have someone msg me back here and service this P.O.S. you call a TV or I can spread this contact information to other sites.

How I go from here depends solely on the reply I get from either your office of the president here in Canada or this site. Either way I don`t care aslong as you either repair the TV or give me some other arrangement.

Any Canadian customers here intereted in joining in this call for action from Samsung please post a reply and take that email and give them your opinion.

I will give Samsung a window here to resolve this situation. If I have not got what I feel is the resonable arrangements I will be taking action and any willing parties are welcome to put their names and contact information here so we can orginize for a class action.
Or just mark as interested.

Whatever I seek in damages will be upto my lawyer but I have a good idea it won`t be a small number.

So Samsung does this sound like something you would find helpful for business.

I suggest someone here or at the office of the president get in contact with me fast.

For those that read this who are Canadian. I am located in southern ontario. I suggest if those numbers above don`t help to find out your rights in the province your in and seek legal advice if Samsung will not meet your demands as a customer.

Again the e-mail for the office of the president is oop@seca.samsung.com

----------------------------------------------------------------------
In closing I will say that to anyone here that reads this that is looking at Samsung products. Avoid them at all cost. It would be cheaper for you to purchase a cinaplus every 6 months for 10 years then purchase anything from samsung. Do not recommend them to your friends or family. If you have even the slightest defect in your TV call for survice under the warranty. Don`t think it`s small and it can wait. Even the slightest sign of trouble likely means a major hareware issue is brewing.

Do everything you can to get the quality and service you diserve not what Samsung thinks you diserve.

The frequency of issues like mine with Samsung products is the Norm not the acception.

I as a customer of this 50 pound turd hanging on my wall I expect a reply to this or my email with something more helpful then I have recieved so far within 72 hours or I think I will take that as a sign that your unwilling to address the issue and I will be forced to look into further action.

Thank you.

Reply 3 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

I have seen several tech Support posts today on other threads. Am I to assume that my issue is one of those unpopular ones that must be left to float around without an answer? Or is this Samsung working it's customer service angle of ignore it and it will go away?

Reply 4 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

Ashloc -

We are sorry you are having issues with Samsung Canada. We are not ignoring you or hoping you go away. The problem is that this forum is run by Samsung Electronics America. We cannot speak on behalf of Samsung Canada. In the past we have helped people from other countries with basic product information but we can't handle service issues from other countries.

As you can see on this forum, we try hard to solve as many issues as we can. We do not censor this forum and we have never asked CNET to remove a post because someone says anything negative about Samsung. However, we cant continue discussions after someone threatens a lawsuit because then the issue goes above our heads. This forum is operated by a couple of Samsung techs that try to help people with their Samsung products. Were not lawyers or executives.

Again, Im sorry you are frustrated with your customer service experience in Canada. I hope it gets resolved. If it means anything, we did forward your post to our colleagues in Canada. Hopefully it helps.

Best,

Mr. Samsung

Reply 5 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

I am pleased that I was responded too at the very least it seems that US customers have got a better deal when it comes to customer service.

I understand your not based in Canada and for that reason can not do much to assist me. I thank you for forwarding my post to those who might be in a position to assist me. However if your canadian collegues and counter parts have shown me anything it's that they will only act if forced.

It's sad that it took me posting on a US forum to get any sort of reply.Purhaps Samsung Canada needs to get some training in customer service from the US team.

Thank you Mr Samsung

At least you have a reason why you can't help which is legitimate.

1 question, Is there a Canadian forum for which you could provide a link so I can continue my rant?

Reply 6 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

Is there a Canadian site that does the same thing you guys are doing here?

Reply 7 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

Ashloc,

There is not a Canadian Forum sponsored by Samsung that I'm aware of. We have fielded a number of questions from over 12 different countries in the past several months, and I believe this is the only forum of it's kind.

In response to Mr. Samsung's email, we received a request from Canada to follow up: Do you have a transaction number? It would look like a 4001xxxxx or a 2001xxxxx? Now, I can't promise anything, and I will have to somewhat step out of this situation, but that information would allow someone to review it so that you can follow up.

I realize it's not much, but at the time, it's the best I can do.

--HDTech

Reply 8 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

No I do not have a transaction number.
Is this something I would get from calling the samsung customer service line? If so then I didn't get anything from them. They just told me there was nothing they could do and I complained to the supervisor. Since then I have sent 2 emails to the office of the president and have recieved no reply so far.

If you mean some sort of # that is proof of purchase then I do not have that as this TV was a complete replacement of the first TV I purchased after it broke.

If this is something you can direct me towards getting somewhere I will get one and get back to you. If this is something I should already have then I guess I will have to go looking because I am unsure what you mean.

Reply 9 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

Samsung is the Land rover of Televisions. Fairly expensive, very nice to look at, expensive to maintain, your friends will be jealous(if they only knew), very poor quality. As far as customer service goes for LandRover I dont know. I hope not the same as Samsung.
The money you may save with Samsung is not worth it. I realize this is the wrong place to post my negative comment about the company I'd like to see go down like the big 3 but I just don't want anyone praising anything about a company who thinks : Sale First Customer Service and Satisfaction last or in Samsungs case NOT AT ALL.

People should call customer service for the product they want to buy before they make the purchase. If I had done that I would own a different television and probably be satisfied(again something samsung knows nothing about)

Reply 10 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

Dealt with similar issue on same model. I bought my POS in June 2007. Panel died May 2009. Warranty was for 1 year. Samsung will not do mcuh for you if you are out of warranty. Paid authorized Samsung rep $108.25 to come out give me an estimate. The estimate for repair was almost $2K. Well I had paid $3100 for this POS. For a few hundred dollars more I can buy a new one. Word of advice. If you buy a Samsung LCD buy as much warranty as you can afford. Chances are you will actually use it!!! The worst part about all this is that I might have to buy Samsung again because the choices for LCDs are very limited. However I will look very hard to see if something comparable will be available in the near future. Had a Panasonic CRT which lasted 18-19 years before it died. I had only paid $910 for it. Those were the good old days.

Reply 11 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

I too am the victim of purchasing a defective Samsung LN52A650 with the TV power cycling off and on never establishing a full screen. This tv is 1-1/2 years old, purchased in summer of 2009. I am a "Purchaser" by profession and did my research, the Samsung LCD's were one of, if not the best rated LCD tv by several sources including Consumer Guide. HOWEVER, these sources didn't comment on chronic problems that had been happening in the background.

It seems regardless of the model (LN40A750, LNT4042H, LN52A650,LN"B" series...) there is the common problem of a defective "main circuit board and power supply" also requiring a "firmware update". I can't believe this comment from a repair tech; "There is not necessarily a root cause, as even this thread indicates different fixes solving the issue. Each of these are handled on a case-by-case basis." YES, lets isolate the case-by-case incidents so as it appears there is no common thread between the problems WHEN IN FACT IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM!

This chronic problem traces back to 2007 and obviously is known by Samsung. How Samsung can promote and sell DEFECTIVE tv's is beyond me! This problem should be dealt with like how the auto industry deals with defective parts. These power boards should be supplied at little or no cost to the consumer while the customer just pays for labour to get the tv fixed. It appears as though Panasonic has had the same power supply problem with their plasma tv's; "Panasonic-TH-58PZ700U; I've seen bad reviews (power supply issues, with various "blinking light" indicators) " SO THIS ISSUE IS NOT NEW TO THE INDUSTRY.

The 800-Samsung customer service did NOTHING for me but direct me to a local service tech. Samsung has NO INTENTION OF DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM. As a prfessional Buyer, I've purchased 40-50 tv's (yes, Samsung tv's) at a time for companies I've worked for, THAT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. I belong to a national Purchasing Association , THERE WILL BE A CIRCULATION ABOUT WHAT HAS HAPPENED WITH SAMSUNG AND THEIR LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE! If enough people complain and hit Samsung AND their distributors in the pocket book for not warning the general consumer about known defective products, maybe things will change.

Reply 12 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

Panasonic had a known problem with a lamp in one if their hd sets. An individual brought about a class action law suit that resulted in a combination of free lamps, extended warranties, refunds and even new sets to those he joined the law suit.
This issue with samsung could go the same way

PDP, Backlight life dead cost to repair $1000.00, It say, the PDP suppose to last 60,000hrs 27 yearsfor 6hrs a day. I pursase the tv may 2007.

i like to join in this call for action from Samsung, please.

Reply 14 : Second broken Samsung 52" LCD TV 1080P

The ps on this tv sounded like a breaking dish when it failed. When I called Samsung customer service I told the person the ps blew up. He apologised on behalf of Samsung and hoped no one got hurt. Bonehead was too dump to realized it is just a figure of speech. I worked as as a registered electronics technologist for 30 years so took the back cover off and had a close look at the ps. No visible failure of any electrolytics. Checked the ceramic fuses for continuity ( out of the cct) then found 2 large transistors mounted on a heatsink (might be mosfets)had literally blasted sideways leaving scorch marks on the heatsink. This boat anchor will likely be too costly to repair and I am not confident if I replace the ps myself there is not some other problem. Since I am not experienced in TV repair I will discuss a repair with someone who is knowledgabe. This set was purchased in May 2007 ( 2 year warranty with 1 year extension through my credit card) If I find a class action lawsuit and there is no action from Samsung, I would certainly join. There is a law office in Regina SK who are known for pursuing class action lawsuits ( Merchant Law Group)

I too have a major problem with a Samsung LCD LN4671F. 3 years old and very little used. Sound but picture looks like a colour vertical price scan code. Have got nowhere with Samsung as it is out of warranty. What happened to their sales pitch of 60,000 hours of use before the screen needs replacing. I got no more than 6,000 hours. I am very frustrated, Technician claims he can't even buy a replacement panel. They are not available. $2,000.00 Down the drain. Where do I turn? Believe me if Samsung doesn't come clean with me I will slaughter their products every which way I can. I have lots of ideas. I'm not holding my breath but am about to deal with their head office. Any suggestions? The squeaky wheel is looking for the grease.

New SA/SB vs. Samsung Series 9

I'm not much of a computer aficionado so I was hoping someone could point out the significant differences one would expect in terms of performance.

SA/SB compared to Samsung Series 9

Series 9 Notebook | Samsung Office Series 9 Notebook

Samsung - Laptop / Intel® Core™ i5 Processor / 13.3" Display / 4GB Memory / 128GB Solid State Drive - Black - 900X3A-A03

Reply 1 : New SA/SB vs. Samsung Series 9

The CPU performance is about the same, even if you upgrade the one on the Sony. Where you will see differences out of the box are the hard drive speeds. The Samsung 9 has a SSD hard drive, which makes everything load much quicker, including your OS. The Sony one does not come with a feature right off the bat, and if you want a SSD, Sony charges way above market price for that upgrade.

Reply 2 : New SA/SB vs. Samsung Series 9

I guess I was assuming you upgrade to the SSD in the Sony. (poor assumption on my part)

Reply 3 : New SA/SB vs. Samsung Series 9

CPU is about the same, but the Samsung will have crappy graphic performances.

Reply 4 : New SA/SB vs. Samsung Series 9

Samsung is ULV...not sure how you guys figure the CPU performance will be the same...

turn signal on cluster doest work

got around to swapping out the original instrument cluster for one with a tachometer on my 2000 corolla. put my original speedometer back in and replaced all the light bulbs. everything works fine, except the left turn signal doesnt light up on the panel. the outside lights blink fine, but the panel light doesnt. took it back out and re-replaced the bulb with another new one, and the same thing happens. all the other parts work fine. any ideas? thanks

Reply 1 : turn signal on cluster doest work

Check that all of the wiring is in place and that none of the end connections are broken. This is unlikely but also check the turn signal fuse (since all of them work on a single fuse I seriously doubt it).

But I'd definitely check out all of the wiring as that's what it sounds like.

Reply 2 : turn signal on cluster doest work

just spent the last hour or so looking thru the old threads. other people have had this problem and it seems to be related to non compatible cluster swapps. I bought mine on ebay and it was advertised as 2000 cluster. I wonder whether it was really a 2001 or 02?. has anyone ever fixed this problem? some of the threads are 2-3 years old and as far as I can tell no one has posted a solution. damn

Reply 3 : turn signal on cluster doest work

Makes sense seeing as Toyota changed a number of things externally and internally with the 2001 - 2002 models. If you're savvy with wiring, you can try to trace your original cluster with the new one and switch around the wiring? I've never looked at it directly so I don't know if it's that simple.

Reply 4 : turn signal on cluster doest work

Not gonna work. Press your rear defrost button if you want the turn signal. :p

You need one from 98,99, or 00.

I bought one for the same reason and resold it when it didn't work. I made $20.

Well I heard Creative caused a lot of issues, so I uninstalled it, but now my Asus G73 Best Buy Model won't recognize my headphones.

Anyone know how to fix this or what to do?

Are these normal 3.5mm headphone jack headphones? If so they are probably not working because "speakers" is not selected as the defaut device under Control Panel Sound Settings. Another posibility is you are plugged into the microphone input, and not the headphone output.

If they are USB headphones then either the software isn't installed or they are not selected as the defaut device.

Also Creative works fine if you use either this...

Creative X-Fi MB for your G73 (Realtek HD 2.48)

or this...

My Petition for getting a Creative MB upgrade on G73JH

Reply 2 : Not recognizing headphones?

Huh, strange.

I'm also having the same problem, but under slightly different circumstances.

About 5 months ago, I made a minor mistake and a tiny sponge came off out of nowhere during repasting process. About a week later, I discovered that my earbuds no longer work on G73. So, my natural conclusion was that the sponge was something related to the audio hardware. I rarely use headphones, so there was really no need to crack my G73 open to check if it was really the culprit.

After looking at OP's post, however, Creative might be the reason behind (I also had to install/uninstall Creative numerous times to make it work properly).

Macbook pro takes 16GB Ram - Why doesn't the X220 ?

The new Macbook pro (i5 & i7) is able to take 16GB Ram (2 x 8GB sticks). I know the new ram is too expensive to consider, but why doesn't the X220 (also i5 & i7) accept that much ram?

Did Lenovo put a cap on the ram, even though Intel supports it?

The X220 probably will take 16GB, but Lenovo hasn't validated it with 8GB sticks since they're crazy expensive and hard to find (Newegg doesn't even stock them).

This is similar to how Lenovo only lists certain SSDs as being compatible with the T420. Any 2.5"/9.5mm SSD should work, but Lenovo can only guarantee that it will work with the drives that they have actually tested.

Note that the X220 (and the T420s) take 2.5"/7mm drives, so most SSDs/HDDs won't fit. The Intel X25-M G2 is a notable exception since it is a 7mm drive once you remove the plastic spacer.

Yup 8GB sticks cost about 2 grand a pop...so does it matter that a MBP can take 16 GB RAM lol.

Did Lenovo put a cap on the ram, even though Intel supports it?

What exactly do you plan to do with this laptop that would need 16gb of memory? :P

PS: Why did i just laugh about the idea of apple saying..it can support 16gb of memory..then they recommend it..i wonder how many would do so..ah ok enough jokes..

16gb of ram is well past the amount of load average workstation laptops can handle. We handle heavy ram intensive cad at work and our workstations hit 8-11gb and that's enough to bog down an core i7 950 machine. So why on Gods green earth would you want that in an average laptop let alone an ultraportable????

Just looking for a video editing solution with premiere pro:

* tower vs notebook (with a vidock & monitor)

... but $1600 for 16GB ram from OWC is too expensive.

By the time you are using all 16 gigs of ram in the current MBP, it will probably shutting itself off from overheating. MBP are not designed for serious CPU intensive tasks.

My job involves writing natural language processing systems using machine learning, and I absolutely appreciate having 16GB of memory in my desktop (i7-2600 / 4GB x 4). When you're writing code that processes gigabytes of text, the classification models can get huge. So you either write your code to be more efficient, or you do what I do and just throw more RAM at the problem.

As soon as 8GB SO-DIMMs come down in price I'll have 16GB on my laptop too. And possibly 32GB of memory on my desktop. You can never have too much RAM.

X220 is a a notebook that didn't fall into the netbook hole.

I believe 8 GB RAM for such a petite computer is more than sufficient for now and the future.

CF-29 and CF-30:raw LCD panels the same ?

So, are the raw LCD panels the same? I have a new 29 screen I'd like to put in the 30 (which is dim, no way it is a 1000nit).

Thanks.

Reply 1 : CF-29 and CF-30:raw LCD panels the same ?

Do you have the number from the back of the CF 30 panel?

Low performance in NFS Shift

I decided to buy Shift, but I am pretty disappointed with the performance of this game. I run it on 1080p no AA/AF, all the other settings on high, but I don't get decent fps: 18-38 depending on how much cars are on screen at a time.

I wouldn't be upset if I knew the g73 couldn't handle this game better. But it can, as seen in youtube videos (check quagmire's for example). And most of these guys run it with stock clocks. My 5870 is clocked at 810/1250.

Video BIOS Version: 012.017.000.004.035992. Catalyst version: 11.4

Any tips?

Thx.

The Vbois is not the most Current..

I would get the most current.

THen go back to 11.2 drivers and try again....

If I am wrong about the Vbios I blame the internet..

As I get my data from the threats found here...

I know that it is not the most current, but from what I understood I can brick my g73 if I update it, so I'd rather not to (out of warranty). Thing is that I don't seem to have problems running other games. Everything that I tried runs as well as it runs for the majority of the g73 users.

Please Help, Samsung's top Plasma, Dark Patches Hockey

Please Help, Samsung's Best Plasma, Dark Patches when watching hockey. Tech says panel needs replacing, Samsung says normal.

Help.. I Bought a PN63C8000 Samsung's Flagship Plasma in November 2010.
I didn't want it for 3d but wanted their best availble at the time.

With light colored backgrounds like in hockey my Samsung PN63C8000 Plasma displays darker patches on the screen that were stationary when the screen panned.
This made it very noticable with a hockey game.

I called Samsung and they set up a work order for a certified Samsung repair shop to come over to look at the set. I was hoping they could make some internal adjustments to solve the problem

The tech had a remote that accessed internal test patterns on the screen Originally he thought the screen was fine because when he called up a white screen there was no blotching. But when he called up their Black and White checkered test pattern he almost looked surprised to see the redish beigh blotching formed by the small specs. This was the exact same pattern I was seeing with a hockey game.

He said they will have to replace the Panel. The blotches were very noticable on the grid and showed up in the exact locations when I was watching Hockey.

They had to take pictures of the set to send to Samsung for approval. They also mentioned the panel is very expensive.
The tech was having a hard time trying to take pictures of the set since he was trying to take it with just an Iphone. Of course the pictures didn't display how bad the blotches were.

Time of day there was quite a bit of light coming thru the patio doors which made the photos even harder to take.

I showed the tech a HD recording of a hockey game I recorded with my Point and shoot camera that I hoped they could send along with the pictures.
The tech noticed the blotching on the screen with the hockey game even thru my small 3inch camera screen and said that would be good to show but they would have to email it and required a jpg.

I also tried taking pictures of it but with a point and shoot but found it extremely difficult to take a picture that represented it acurately.

I tried taking pictures a hockey game paused but the blotches would just look as if there were shadows on the ice or look as if the ice was just darker in those areas. Of couse once the game is moving then it is obvious the darker spots were stationary on the screen. Kind of like that cluster of pixels were not lighting as well but showing redish beigh.

So I noticed I could duplicate the patches when I connect my Notebook to an HDMI port and call up something with a white background like Pbrush.

Here are some of the pictures I managed to take. Posted to the following location
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1315102

I circled the areas of concern. The actual image is in real life is darker than the picture but this is the best I managed with my Point and shoot.

The repair shop said to me they have to send the pictures to Samsung and request approval for and expensive part.
After the repair shop sent the pictures to Samsung.
The repair shop called us to say Samsung rejected the repair and Samsung said "As per QC this is normal."

I'm not concerned about how the tv looks with a test pattern or static image. But when watching a sports event Like hockey (which we watch alot of)
It's extremly disapointing to see Samsungs "Best" Plasma set with darker patches on the screen. It's also distracting seeing the patches when watching the game.

I watched another game yesturday.

The patches are pretty distracting, since the patches stay on the screen and don't move with the ice.

Even saw the patch in a TV show that showed a light blue sky.

Any Samsumg Tech able to help at all?
Is there any Samsumg Tech able to help at all?

Is there at least somthing I can try to adjust in the picture settings to make it less noticable?

Thanks, Any input or suggestions would be appreciated.

norm18T,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having a problem with your new television.

I've sent up a request this morning to request that one of the managers review your case. I have no indication if this can be fixed, but the situation can be reviewed and that is what I've requested. Keep me posted.

Please if viewing the pictures I took of the screen shown in the Avsforum link, view the pictures on a couple of different monitors if you do not see the reddish patch.
When I view the same picture I took on my HP notebook screen the reddish darker patch does not show very well, but on my dell monitors at work the reddish patch is fairly obvious and represents the patch on my TV a little closer.
Also my picture shows a little moir effect which blends into the patch making it less obvious in the picture.
The TV in real life, the area surrounding the patch is nice and even, so the patches are more noticeable than shown in the pictures.
I think when the screen background is a yellow it also shows a reddish patch, I can verify this and try to take a picture if it would help.

Also if it helps, the internal test screen the tech opened that showed the reddish patches/ pixels is the Black and white checkered pattern.
The one that has the black squares floating in the white background.

Ever since, I've been looking closely at plasmas in stores, at the gym whenever they are playing hockey, but have yet to see any with similar patches.
Even a lower model 63" Samsung plasma at a Costco (which I was watching quite closely) didn't have it during a hockey broadcast

Please let me know if there is anything at all I can do or try.

Thanks again for the reply

Norm

Hi Samsung HDtech

It's been a few weeks now (3 weeks), still have't heard anything.
Is someone supposed to contact me?

Can anything be done to fix my TV?

Thanks
